Directory launching soon

Looking for an independent private midwife?

We’re building a trusted directory of independent midwives providing private clinical maternity care across the UK.

While our full directory is being finalised, you can tell us your location, due date and preferences, and we’ll connect you with independent midwives we know where possible.

Independent midwives provide clinical care in their own right. Mobile Midwives is not the clinical provider of that care.

What Families Say

Real words from people we’ve supported during pregnancy.

“I booked a one-off appointment during a period of real anxiety about my second birth. I felt listened to and supported to work through my worries, and the guidance I received was calm, kind and incredibly reassuring. It helped me feel more confident about the experience I want to have.”

— Elise, second pregnancy

“After a really difficult and emotional pregnancy, I felt like I was constantly battling to be heard about the birth I wanted. One conversation made such a difference — I felt calmer, listened to, and genuinely excited about my upcoming birth after a previous traumatic experience. The support was kind, knowledgeable and honest, and helped me feel like a person again, not just a patient.”

— Kerry, second pregnancy

“Both of my pregnancies and births have been very different. Having access to knowledgeable, experienced midwifery support at such a vulnerable time made a huge difference for me and my family. I felt reassured, supported and able to make sense of what was happening, and I’m incredibly grateful for the guidance I received.”

— Sarah, parent of two

About Mobile Midwives

Nickie Witcombe, registered midwife and founder of Mobile Midwives

Mobile Midwives was created to make pregnancy support feel more human.

So many people tell us they feel rushed, overwhelmed, or unsure where to turn when they have questions about pregnancy, birth, or their options. Mobile Midwives exists to offer calm, non-judgemental support alongside NHS care — a space to talk things through, make sense of information, and feel more confident in your choices.

Founded by Nickie Witcombe, a registered midwife, hypnobirthing practitioner and educator, Mobile Midwives connects families with experienced, independent midwives who genuinely care about listening first. The focus is not on telling you what to do, but on helping you understand your options and feel supported in whatever decisions are right for you.

Whether you’re early in pregnancy, preparing for birth, navigating a previous difficult experience, or simply wanting reassurance, Mobile Midwives is here to support you — calmly, respectfully, and on your terms.

You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need space to ask the questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you help with?

We offer calm, education, information and guidance on pregnancy, birth preparation, feeding, postnatal adjustment, and navigating your options. We can help you make sense of information, plan questions for your appointments, and feel more confident about next steps.

Is this a replacement for NHS maternity care?

No. Mobile Midwives is designed to sit alongside your NHS (or private) care and does not replace clinical maternity services. We are not an emergency service and we cannot take calls from people who are in labour or who need urgent medical help. If you’re concerned about your health or your baby’s wellbeing, you should contact your midwife, GP, NHS 111, or 999 as appropriate.

What do you mean by “independent midwives”? Are they the same as a doula?

Independent midwives are fully qualified, registered midwives who work outside of the NHS, often on a self-employed basis. They are not the same as doulas. Midwives are clinically trained professionals regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), whereas doulas are not clinically trained or regulated.

All midwives listed through Mobile Midwives are registered with the NMC and hold appropriate professional insurance. Any clinical care they provide is arranged independently and outside the Mobile Midwives service.

Do all of your midwives offer home visits?

No. Some of our midwives offer home visits, and others provide support online only. You can see this clearly on each midwife’s profile, along with the locations they are prepared to travel to.

When can I contact you — and can my partner or supporter join?

You can contact Mobile Midwives at any point in your pregnancy. Partners or other supporters are very welcome to join consultations if you’d like — many people find it helpful to hear the same information and talk things through together.
